Religious Demographics

So after reading a blog post by The Canadian Atheist it was pointed out that the city of Peterborough, the city I live in has a high population of atheists. So I checked with Stats Canada and found that in 2001 the atheist population in Peterborough was about 17%... the new stats aren't available yet... but 17% is a pretty impressive number, and it was one I found surprising considering the number of churches in Peterborough. After doing a quick search for churches in Peterborough I found over 60, and Peterborough has a population of close to 75,000 people. That's a lot of churches for such a small city.

So why does Peterborough have such a large number churches?
